Marketing automation needs an operating model, not another flowchart
The hard part is deciding ownership, evidence and escalation—not drawing more arrows.

Marketing systems become useful when the operating decisions around them are explicit: ownership, evidence, permission, exceptions and the next action.
Start with the recurring decision
A useful automation begins with a decision that repeatedly consumes time: who should receive this, what context is required, what action is safe, and what happens when the expected data is missing. Map the decision before selecting triggers or channels.
Design the exception path
The happy path is rarely the expensive part. A durable workflow names owners for missing consent, failed delivery, incomplete identity, stale data, conflicting attribution and work that requires human judgement.
Keep the evidence close
Operators should be able to move from an action to the signal, rule, agent output or approval that produced it. That operating trail makes optimisation faster and prevents automation from becoming unaccountable background activity.
The goal is less coordination cost with more accountability.
